Founded in 1983, the Indian River Genealogical Society, Inc. (IRGS) began when the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century of Sebastian met to discuss the need for a genealogy society in Indian River County. IRGS is a non-profit corporation, governed by a Board of Directors which includes five elected officers and appointed chairmen of various committees.
The objectives of the Society are to further genealogical research and promote interest in family history by:
In addition, the Society’s goal is to educate and guide future generations of Indian River County on the value of preserving family records and local histories. The society published in 1987 Cemeteries of Indian River County and is currently compiling church records of Indian River County for a future publication.
Membership benefits include a 12-page newsletter from September until May, discounts for classes, workshops and seminars, monthly meetings with special programs from professional speakers, and individual help from society members. The Society currently has several Genealogy Interest Groups for those who have ancestors in Scotland, Germany, Ireland, England, and Sweden. Other groups have been formed in areas such as Quakers and Personal Ancestral File (PAF) software. Research and historical information is shared to help those who are less experienced.
Membership Meetings are generally held on the second Tuesday of each month except June, July and August at the Indian River Main Library located at 1600 21st Street in downtown Vero Beach, FL. Please check the events page on their website to confirm the date and meeting time.
